6. Do people need to do lots of cardio to burn fat? Cardiovascular training is an easy way of burning any excess calories we may have stored. Like I have previously touched on the intensity of the session will determine what energy system our bodies use. The traditional target heart rate for fat burning cardio is 120-140bpm however it has been proven that we can still achieve body fat reduction with interval type training. Interval training is where we manipulate our heart rate from a low to a high and back to a low rate. This principle is normally utilised to improve cardiovascular fitness and repertory function. With the bodybuilders I coach for competition prep we normally do 45-60 mins of low intensity am and 30-45 mins at low intensity pm.
